Bingo is one of the most enduring games of all time, and naturally over the years people have tried to come up with strategies about how to win! One of the most well-known theories is the Tippett theory, which attempts to predict which numbers are more likely to be called depending on the length of the bingo game.

In this blog we’ll explain how the Tippett theory works – or, more accurately, how it doesn’t work! We’ll also give you some tips on how to make the most out of your online bingo game, without the need to resort to mathematical strategies and theories…

Disclaimer: Never Rely on Bingo Strategies!

Before we begin, it’s important to make a few things clear. The most important is that all outcomes in bingo are completely down to chance. While you may think that the Tippett method (or any other theory, for that matter) is a good strategy, the truth is that it’s impossible to determine which numbers will be called.

Although using strategies like this can feel exciting and empowering initially, it’s important not to let them give you false confidence. Always remember that no theory or strategy can guarantee you a win – particularly when you’re aware of the casino’s house edge, which ensures that in the long run the casino always has the advantage.

When playing online bingo – or any other online game, for that matter – remember to always gamble responsibly. Never spend more money than you can afford to lose, and never treat gambling like a profession or a way to make money.

What Is the Tippett Method?

The Tippett method is named after its creator, British statistician Leonard Tippett. His bingo strategy centred around the idea of a median number in bingo, and attempted to predict which balls would be called depending on how long the game was.

How It Works

Tippett wrote that the more numbers are called in a bingo game, the more likely it is that those numbers would be closer to the median number. If we’re talking about 75 ball bingo, the median number (which is the halfway point) would be 38.

According to this theory, if you’re playing a longer game of bingo you should choose a card with numbers that are closer to 38. In this case, we’d define a longer game as one where you need to get a full house to win. By default, 90 ball bingo games are always considered to be longer games.

However, if you’re playing a shorter game (for example, one where you only need one or two lines to win), it may be more beneficial to choose a card with numbers closer to the lowest and highest numbers – 1 and 75, in a 75 ball bingo game.

Why Tippett’s Theory Doesn’t Work

Although the Tippett strategy is interesting in theory, in practice it doesn’t work! Most online bingo games don’t give you the option to choose your bingo cards. Not only that, but most bingo cards follow a certain format with lower numbers on the left, followed by higher numbers on the right. What Tippett would have preferred (for a longer game, at least) is more numbers closer to  the middle number (38 for 75 ball bingo).

There are a few other holes in his theory, too (sorry, Tippett!). There are lots of other variables that can affect who wins a bingo game, from how many players there are to how many tickets each player has bought.

Finally – and perhaps most importantly – bingo is a game of chance! Even though Tippett’s theory may make sense mathematically, in reality there’s no way of predicting which numbers will be called.

So What Is the Best Bingo Strategy?

Okay, so Tippett’s theory is pretty much a no-go. But there are some other ways to make sure you get the most out of your online bingo experience:

Familiarise yourself with the game

This one may seem obvious, but it’s definitely worth doing! With so many different online bingo games out there, it’s important to make sure you understand the rules of the one you’re playing. Find out how prizes are won in your game - for example, if there are prizes for one line, two lines, or only a full house, when the game starts, and what the minimum and maximum ticket prices are.

Choose a bet that suits your budget

One of the most important things to do when gambling online is to choose a sensible budget - and stick to it. This means only betting within your means, and never spending more than you can afford to lose.
